Payment instrument development and innovation continued in 2021:

  • The value of instant payments increased
  • The number of instant links followed an upward path
  • The development of the instant payment request service was completed

Latvijas Banka together with other members of the Eurosystem started to explore the technological feasibility of the introduction of the digital euro, as well as its impact on the application of monetary policy and the financial system as a whole.

The EKS, used for processing customer payments and instant payments, was maintained and developed.

The operation of real-time TARGET2-Latvija intended for effecting interbank payments and conducting monetary policy operations was ensured.

Oversight of the payment and financial instrument settlement systems has been performed to assess the efficiency and security of the above systems.
